Copper theft is on the rise in New Brunswick, and it’s costing its victims dearly in time and money.

Copper is valuable and commonly used for electrical and telecommunications wires as well as water pipes. Thieves break into buildings and substations to steal any copper they can find, causing damage that is costly to repair. Some thieves even cut down wires directly from utility poles, causing widespread electrical and communication disruptions and creating a significant safety hazard.

Copper thieves often have a background working with metal and typically work in groups, using trucks and ATVs to commit their crimes. They then try to sell the stolen copper for a quick profit at places like metal scrap yards.

The public plays an important role in helping to reduce, prevent and solve crime. Anyone with information about, or who suspects, illegal activity in their neighbourhood is asked to contact their local police. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by downloading the secure P3 Tips Mobile App, or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimenb.ca.
